Bacteria that we actually want in our bodies? Absolutely! Probiotics are “friendly bacteria” that live in our intestines and help the immune system by discouraging the growth of harmful disease-causing bacteria.

What’s the benefit?
The immune system boost provided by probiotics can actually prevent health problems and treat a variety of ailments. Strains of these healthy bacteria have been shown to:
  1. Reduce colic in infants
  2. Prevent eczema and allergies
  3. Reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome
  4. Help manage lactose intolerance
  5. Promote bowel regularity, and
  6. Prevent infections in the intestines and elsewhere in the body including bronchitis and pneumonia.
Putting probiotics on your baby’s menu
To maintain a healthy balance of organisms in the intestines, it’s recommended that babies, children and adults consume probiotics daily. Your baby may already be getting some of these beneficial bacteria if she drinks breast milk or eats yogurt. Other natural sources of probiotics include kefir, aged cheeses, miso, sauerkraut, and kimchi—foods that may not be on your child’s plate yet. To help parents provide probiotics we’ve added six strains of these bacteria to our new line of infant cereals, HAPPYBELLIES. These cereals are perfect first foods for baby, made from organic whole grains, and with the added benefit of probiotic bacteria.

What about supplements?
If you or your child need to take antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection, consider increasing your intake of probiotic-containing foods and/or taking a supplement of a probiotic like acidophilus, as the antibiotic will not only kill the harmful bacteria in your system, but will kill many of the healthy probiotics, as well.

It’s a fact . . . according to a recent report from the Organic Center called “Still No Free Lunch: Nutrient Levels in US food supply eroded by pursuit of high yields.” Evidently, US Department of Agriculture reports show that compared with 50 years ago, we now have more abundant grains, fruit and vegetable crops, but lower levels of vitamins and minerals in these foods.

Studies have found 10–25% lower levels of iron, zinc, protein, calcium, vitamin C. And experts suggest the same is likely true for levels of other phytochemicals.

Why? Modern conventional farming relies on heavy use of fertilizers, close plant spacing, and high use of pesticides. These chemicals and farming methods make the plants grow faster but as a result, the plants don’t develop deep roots or develop their own defenses to fight off harsh conditions on their own. The result: Lower nutrient concentrations.

How to find more nutritious produce? Eat organic. According to the report, organic farming produces lower yields but organic crops have higher levels of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals—up to 20% more minerals, and up to 30% more antioxidants. More nutritional bang for your buck—another reason to choose organic foods for yourself and your family.

Recipe Ideas for Baby
TREAT YOURSELF TO A HAPPYBABY SMOOTHIE:

Grrreat Greens (spinach/mango/pear) becomes a healthy treat when you blend it with half a banana, equal parts vanilla and plain non-fat yogurt, and pineapple-coconut juice. (Add strawberries if green is an issue with your picky eaters.)

With Mama Grain (black bean, quinoa, banana), our favorite is mixing it with strawberries, vanilla non-fat yogurt, half a banana and either apple or orange juice.
