Growing up in the country, I have spent countless hours in the backseat and consider myself a veteran of road trips. But a road trip with our baby was something new. There were a few key discoveries which made the 8 hour drive to Maine with our 12-month-old tolerable...even fun!
First we discovered that Whole Foods Markets make the best rest stops. They are everywhere and often only a short detour off the highway. Have lunch, get a decent cup of coffee, change a diaper, and buy a few groceries for dinner when you arrive. With the new Whole Foods app for the iPhone you can locate and map the nearest one from the road. We also mapped a playground along the way for a quick stretching of legs on the swings. Gotta love the iPhone. And as we all know, road trips are all about the music and snacks (and a little bit of bribery). See my earlier post for our music playlist. And as for baby snacks, we love Happy Baby Food and Mum Mums. Happy Baby is the best-tasting prepackaged baby food we’ve tried, very nutritious, and comes packaged in a pouch which is super-easy to feed baby in the car. And Mum Mums are teething rice crackers that stop tears in mid-motion! Plus not nearly as messy in the car seat as traditional teething biscuits. As for bribery (and for the sake of your own sanity)...bring a new toy!
