Gardening with Kids - its OK to get Messy!

We have a pretty big organic garden that we started a few years back. As a family around this time of year we begin thinking about what vegetables and herbs we will plant for the season.

Living in the Northeastern US you may think it's too early to start your garden, but you'd be wrong :)... Lettuce, Spinach and Beans can be planted now and this gives little ones an excuse to get their little hands dirty.

We use old HAPPYBABY frozen baby food containers for our seed starters, and the composted dirt that was made throughout the course of last season. If you have good weather I say set up a little station outside with the containers, seeds, a spoon (for scooping) and a spray bottle filled with water so your little ones can do it all on their own. If you can't do it outside then use plenty of old newspaper to cover your floor or table, because it can be a bit messy.

BoyPlantingDirections

1. Poke a few pin size holes in the bottom of each container
2. Put one scoopful of dirt in the bottom of each container
3. Place bean seed on top of soil
4. Fill the rest of container up with dirt
5. Spray generously with water until well moistened
6. Place inside on a window sill that gets plenty of sun and check daily to see when it needs watering
7. Once it has begun to grown then pop it out of the container and plant in your garden!
